TIP - Plan smart

Avoid weekend congestion
Local hikers from both Austria and Italy fill the huts on Fridays and Saturdays. Beginning your trek on a Monday or Tuesday provides more flexibility and quieter stages

Know your long and demanding sections --> Plan shorter recovery stages after difficult ones and keep a buffer day for bad weather.

The following days involve long hours and steep climbs or descents:

  • Sillian → Sillianer Hütte – big ascent if starting from the valley.

  • Hochweißsteinhaus → Wolayerseehütte – challenging ridge day with exposure.

  • Plöckenpass → Zollnerseehütte – long, mixed terrain.

Budget and money

Based on my personal experience and recent field checks from 2025, here’s a realistic budget estimation for those planning a trek with hut overnights in the Alps. Prices may vary slightly depending on the region, season, and membership discounts (e.g., Alpenverein).

Accommodation in Mountain Huts

  • Alpenverein Members: €35–45 per night (half board)

  • Non-members: €55–75 per night (half board)

  • Alm (Alpine farms): €40–60 per night

Meals

  • Dinner: €15–25 (if not included)

  • Breakfast: €10–15 (if not included)

  • Lunch: €12–20

💳 Cash or Credit Card?

While some huts do accept credit cards, many do not have card terminals or reliable mobile signal.
It’s strongly recommended to carry around 80% of your budget in cash.
If you happen to run short, most hut owners can provide bank details for a transfer once you have reception.

TIP for your pocket

Consider Alpine Club membership
If you plan more than one alpine trek, join an Alpine Club (e.g. Austrian Alpine Club). Members enjoy reduced hut rates, rescue insurance, and access to detailed maps.

Water

  • In some sections there aren't options for clean water refill.

  • Water sources along the ridge are not always dependable.

  • Fill up whenever possible and plan for the long sections wihthout water source in between.

  • I don't think that filter or treatment tablets are a must for this trek.

Accommodation

Along the Carnic High Trail you’ll find a wide range of comfortable and well-equipped alpine huts, typically located at scenic passes or panoramic ridges. Those are the Mountain Huts (Rifugios / Hütten) and Alms. The sleeping accommodation are comfortable, heated huts, meals and the best comfort you can expect in the multi days trek.

Booking & Timing

Make accommodation reservations early
Because the trail includes many alpine huts (mountain refuges) and in peak season they fill up, book in advance — especially for the high-season (mid-July to mid-August).

Doing so reduces stress and allows you to choose preferred stages.

  • Book early - especially from mid-July to mid-August, when both Austrian and Italian hikers fill the huts.

  • If possible, start your trek on a Monday or Tuesday to avoid weekend crowds (Fridays and Saturdays are busiest).

  • Cancellations: most huts are understanding if weather changes, but inform them early.

To plan your costs --> Jump to budget and money
What does the huts provide?
  • Cousin with manu besides the half board plan offering food and beverages, local homemade dishes and desserts. There's also option to buy some snacks, chocolate... and order a picnic packed for the next hiking day.

  • On most days you will pass through a hut for launch. You can ask for a picnic for the next day.

  • A liner is A must. You will receive blankets in the hut.

  • Rules of the hut: Remove boots at the entrance, keep quiet after 22:00. Courtesy makes the hut experience far more pleasant.

  • Showers with hot water often with limited time (3–5 minutes) via tokens.

  • Heated dorms or private rooms with blankets and pillows.

  • Drying rooms for wet clothes and boots.

  • Common rooms that are warm, cozy, and often filled with local hikers sharing stories over dinner.

  • And, of course- breathtaking views right from your window.

Meals

Food quality varies.

  • All huts offer breakfast and dinner, and most can prepare a picnic lunches (sandwiche, fruit, something sweet), so there’s no need to carry heavy food.

  • Upon your arrival to the hut, during the checkin you will be asked to choose dinner. Even if it's only noon.

  • Alm - Recommended!! for a truly authentic experience, quality fresh made food ingredients.

  • Dinner and breakfast are included in half-board (Halbpension).

  • Expect generous meals, though quality can differ from hut to hut.

  • Some huts offer excellent cuisine with fresh local ingredients, while others are more basic.

  • Vegetables and salads are surprisingly common here compared to other alpine regions! A welcome change for vegetarians.

  • Breakfasts tend to be richer than in the Dolomites or Tyrol- often including eggs, cereals, and local dairy products.

Alm Experience 🧀 Authentic and Local

The Alm (plural: Almen) are working alpine pastures, where farmers produce cheese, butter, and fresh dairy during summer months.
Staying or eating in an Alm offers a more authentic and rural experience than a typical hut.

Expect:

  • Locally made cheeses, fresh milk, and homemade pastries.

  • Fewer guests, simpler facilities — but warmer hospitality.

  • Sometimes shared sleeping rooms above the stable — rustic but charming.

  • Often cash only and not always availability of showers yet many consider this the highlight of the trail for its atmosphere and food quality.

  • Cheaper than a mountain huts.

TIP

Balance budget <> experience

While huts provide meals and snacks, always carry a reserve snack and water in your pack.

ALM is Highly recommended: Even if you don’t stay overnight, stop for lunch or coffee at least once in an Alm --> it’s the heart of the Carnic cultural experience.

Snacks are available to buy, though they are not cheap. --> Bring some with you for every day.
